Branch History
Bofield CCE was founded in 1995, pioneered in a major way by Peter Neary, a great music tutor from Bofield. Currently the branch offers classes in all traditional instruments and caters for all ages. We have Céilí bands and Grúpa Cheols at Under-12, 12-15, 15-18 and Senior level. Individuals and groups participate in competitions in Scór, Readoirí, Fleadhanna Cheoil and Slogadh and we regularly win competitions at all levels including All-Ireland. Our members come from Bonniconlin, down to Enniscrone, Ballina, Killala, Lahadane and to Newport and Ardagh.
Every Summer we host Seissiún nights in the Fr. Peyton Centre in Attymass showcasing local and visiting musicians, attracting large audiences from far and near. All are welcome.
Please refer to our Facebook page Bofield CCÉ, where we post performances by our members, so as to promote and communicate our activities locally and globally e.g. recent virtual seissiúns

Bofield, Gort na mBó, is a small townland in Bonniconlon parish, situated four miles south-east of Ballina in Co. Mayo, on the east side of the river Moy.
It has a long history of music. The Loftus family in Bofield established the first Céilí band in the 1930's. During the 1950's, the then school teacher, James Brennan, had a number of school bands which played and won at numerous competitions and were recorded by RTE. In the 1970's, local musicians, under the guidance of Peter Neary, revived the adult band winning at Mayo and Connacht Fleadh Cheoil in 1978.
The Bofield Céilí band launched a book on the history of music in the area ‘Gort na mBó - A Century of Song, in 2002, with an accompanying CD, ‘100 Years A-Growing’.
2020 was the 25th anniversary of the branch. In 2020 Bofield CCÉ hosted its first Summer School and hosted three concerts from 17th to 24th July.
In 2021 the branch published the Bofield Tune book and compiled a video of the history of Bofield CCE.
