Branch History
The Moy Valley branch of Comhaltas was founded at the historical “Ceide Fields”, Ballycastle on May 28th 1993 to coincide with the Mayo 5,000 Celebrations. It was established by Uilleann piper Eamonn Walsh, originally from Ballina now domiciled in Dublin and Padraic O’Laimhin from Lacken.
The branch has a catchment area from Foxford -Ceide including Ballina, Crossmolina, Moygownagh, Kilfian, Cooneal, Killala, Bonniconlon, Ballycastle, Lacken and their surrounding areas.
Today the Moy Valley branch is one of the most active branches in the County and are constantly involved in promoting traditional music classes, set-dancing and the Irish language.
It has hosted a County Fleadh and two All-Ireland Fleadhanna in 1997 and 1998. The branch have made a number of TV appearances, including the RTE1 programme “Up for the Final” in 1996. Musicans and dancers from the branch were also special guests of renowned singer ‘Dana’ on RTE1, who shared the programme with pop group ‘Westlife’.
In 2000, the Moy Valley branch founded the Irish Music, Sports and Arts Peace project which aims to promote Peace and reconciliation through the medium of Music, Sports and the Arts. The project has received over 400 letters of support from Political and Religious Leaders from around the World including Musicians, Sports celebrities, and Film stars.
In 1999 President Mary McAleese received the branch in Aras an Uachtarain to acknowledge the work of the branch. In 2002, The Lord Mayor of Belfast received the branch in a Civic reception in Belfast City Hall – the first time a branch of Comhaltas were received in Belfast City hall.
The branch regularly fundraise for a number of charities both at home and abroad including the parish of Colinas in Brazil. Moy Valley CCE’s main priority is organising traditional music classes and if anybody needs help in getting started on any instrument and particularly the Uilleann pipes, please contact Eamonn Walsh on 087-277531.
